In practice, the project resulted in the creation of two ecosystems, one land-based on the extension, and the other sea-based in alignment with the extension.

The extension technique consisted of creating a sanctuary in the form of a large barrage where construction work could be carried out without adversely affecting the sea beds. This barrier was made of caissons transported by sea and placed on the sea bed along the isobath line at -35 metres; the strength of the swell and the waves was dissipated within the Jarlan-type cavities. The Posidonia meadows of Le Larvotto and the slope of the Spélugues coral reef have been kept intact, restored and supplemented by new structures suited to accommodating the expansion of animal and plant life.

On the surface, in collaboration with landscape architect Michel Desvigne, a new landscape has been developed, dominated by large stone pines. Beneath this canopy, characteristic scrub vegetation has acclimatised and functions as an ecosystem.
