This research, which gave rise to a number of completed projects, in Veszprem ( Hungary ), San Luis Potosi ( Mexico ), iSkawina ( Poland ), Bouznika ( Morocco ) and in Wuhan (China) was called "L’usine générique" (The Generic Factory).

It acted as a guide, and involved defining a genre, not an object. Each entity— the factory floor, the technical elements, the offices and services —was specially designed and combined with the others.
The vast factory floor has a skylit area at the center. Labs and engineering offices are open-space areas ; their location and layout combine confidentiality and visual communication with the production area.
L’usine générique has a geographical dimension in that it involves defining constituent elements, the way they are positioned, and the way they relate to one another. This process is then updated according to the factory and the processes in question.

The factory floor, the "satellites", and the "cursor” make up the overall map of the factory, whose chosen site and industrial processes constitute both constraints and assets; the relevance of each unique solution depends on these three intersecting parameters.
