Bercy Village

With their rugged stone walls and roofs of flat brown tiles, the former wine storehouses of Paris are arranged, or almost lined up, along the cour Saint-Émilion, at right angles to the Seine.

Shops, bars and restaurants give this renovated location a new lively feel, thus preserving a suggestion of the sophistication and abundance of its original purpose – reserves of wine for the entire city.

The restored wine storehouses, while altered, have retained elements that reveal their history, and the original layout is still recognisable. New storehouses extend the old ones. On either side, a long corrugated zinc roof reprises their rhythm and geometry at a higher level. A metal structure, with infillings of stone, glass or clapboard: the composition varies, from the Parisian-style indoor market to the retail stores.

Transition in the elevations, and traditional materials for a contemporary architecture: from the business district to the Jardin de la Mémoire, transverse walkways guide passersby from the city to the village without interruption. From small turn-of-the-century warehouses to new shops, the Bercy Village wine storehouses have come to terms with time and place in a search for authenticity: space that measures time and grants passersby the time to measure space.
