Pierre Mauroy Stadium

Both a 50,000-seat stadium and a concert venue with variable geometry, the Grand Stade de Lille project is as pleasing for the originality of its architecture as for its multifunctional character.

Enveloped in a translucent shell with rounded corners, the stadium has an immense luminous screen which constitutes its urban façade. Drawn from the generative structure, the envelope constitutes in itself a boundary between the external public area and the sports enclosure. Consisting of horizontal polycarbonate tubes spaced progressively up the height of the building, this phased and luminous envelope resembles a magic lantern.

The interval between the envelope and the stands houses all the circulations as well as the numerous exits required for safety reasons. This gallery, an open-air space of welcome and transition, accessible at ground-floor level from the forecourt, constitutes a foyer on the same scale as the stadium and gives people outside the enclosure a glimpse of the playing field.

A moving roof consisting of two sliding rigid panels enables conversion of the stadium from an open-air venue to an immense covered hall. A new arena located under the turf is revealed as an extension of the stands by moving half the playing field sideways. This arrangement greatly increases the variety of sports and shows that this new facility can accommodate.
